An auction on New Years day 1924 – what a brave auctioneer and how did he sell it to the vendor?
Description
An auction of 153 blocks on New Years day seems like a big risk but reports of the sale in The Herald (page 4) on the 9th of January said:-
“Messrs Phillips nml Nicholson having submitted for sale during the holidays the “Torry Hill” estate, Upwey. The sale was one of the best ever held in the district, about 400 people being present and the bidding being very spirited and 74 lots being sold for a total of £4042. Prices realised were as follows;-— Morris Road, £46 to £86/10/ per lot; Thompson Road, £50 to £70 per lot; New Morris road, £50 to £98 per lot; Torry Hill road, £37/10/ to £50 per lot.”
The subdivision starts near the juction of Deans Road and Morris Road and heads north on the eastern side of Morris Road to cover both sides of Thompson Road then east to Ferny Creek. Other streets include Torry Hill Road and Henderson Street.
