Brunswick Reserve “O’Connor’s Paddock” 10th November 1888 – Brunswick
$16.50 – $49.50
A very smart poster designed to help move many allotments right at the end of the land boom. Hover you cursor over the map for an enlarged view.
Description
It is close to the end of the Land Boom and the auctioneers have to move 214 allotments. There were plenty of advertisements for the sale but no reports on the success on the day. Fortunately someone has recorded what looks to be the sale price on some of the blocks. Lot 34 in section 1 may have sold for 52/6 per frontage foot. That would be £2-12-6 times 50 (the frontage of the block) = £131-5-0. Quite a sum for that time. Even some of the blocks further back in the subdivision brought substancial prices – lot 19 on Horne Street going for 35/- per foot – a total of nearly £58. The subdivision starts on the west side of Lygon Street between Glenlyon Road and Cocoa Jackson Lane and heads west to the eastern side of Garden Street. Other streets covered are Bruce, Bank, Ewing, Allan, Horne and Warburton Streets and Belfast Road.
