Description

The “Land Boom” is only half way through its life but already the auctioneers are offering weatherproof marques and refreshments. A week after the sale the auctioneers claimed a very successful day with a larger than normal crowd and all allotments offered being sold. Takings for the sale amounted to over £14,000 – an average of £100 per block. By February 1888 many blocks had been further subdivided and were being resold – on Cooke Street nine 4 room cottages were for sale with a frontage of 136 feet to Cooke Street, an average frontage of 15 feet. In 1885 the allotments were offered with frontages of 33 feet. The subdivision starts on the north east corner of Church Street and Simpson’s Road (now Victoria Road), heads east to cover both sides of Cooke Street then heads north to the river. The land north of Nelson Street has been aquired by Carlton and United Breweries.
