Description
Page 2 of the Geelong Advertiser reported that this “was one of the most successful sales ever held in Geelong. There was a very large attendance, and all parties seemed anxious to purchase, the bidding was Brisk.” Sales varied from 21 shillings to 33 shillings per frontage foot. It seems that lot 64 sold for 33/- per frontage foot – that is 33 time the frontage which was 33 feet, £54-9-0, quite a sum for a block in 1888. The auctioneer has recorded the price of most blocks but some are a little hard to read. The subdivision would seem to start on the south east corner of Pakington and Wellington Streets and heads east to effecively Maddern Avenue and then south to cover the northern side of O’Connell (now just Oconnell) Street. Kings Lane now runs through to Oconnell and Veres Lane has appeared off Oconnell.
