Description

Here we have 272 acres for sale on Cotham Road between Balwyn and Union Roads. This part of Union Road was called Warrington in 1883. Below is part of an advertisement from The Argus of the 17th of February 1883:

CANTERBURY TOWNSHIP
This grand paddock, containing 272 acres, formerly the property of Mr Henty, is well known as the most beautiful and most English-like of any in Victoria. From every part of the land a most extensive view of either Melbourne, the bay, the surrounding mountains or valleys is to be had.
The auctioneer has recorded the sale price of some blocks – the commercial sites on the corner of Balwyn and Cotham going for 20/- per frontage foot, that’s a total of £66 for lot 19. Much larger allotments over on Winmalee Road went for just 7/- per foot. The whole of Mr. Henty’s block extends from Cotham Road to Winmallee Road in the north.
