Description
The date is 24th of March, 1888 and the “Land Boom” still has more than 6 months to run. The auctioneers have arranged a special train to carry “investors” to the site. A newspaper article after the auction described the participants as “thirsty”. Maybe there was not liquid refreshment with the “Free Luncheon”. The development is bounded on the east by Victoria Avenue (Government Road on the map), in the north by Beresford (Govt Road on the map). The eastern boundary is Kidgell Street and both sides of Rouke Street make the southern border. Blair, Kerr and Baker Streets run more or less east west through the development.
