Description
Ngarveno, I understand, is the aboriginal word for “Rising Sun” or “Sunnyside”. Mr John Davies named his house so in 1862 and by 1886 had established a 16 acre vineyard producing wine of note. The auction on the 17th took £12,398-7-0 and was described in the Argus as “a most successful sale”. The sale continued on the next Saturday the 24th of March. Davies’ house sold, towards the end of April, for £2,700. Streets involved include Puckle Street (now Dean), Filson (now Steele), Vine, Stuart, Davies, Ngarveno and McNae Streets.
