Cotham Estate Upper Hawthorn 4th October 1884 – Deepdene

There was an auction of three lots totaling 94 acres on the 3rd of September – in the auctioneer’s office. Now, only 31 days later, we have an auction of 94 allotments. The matching numbers, 94, has to be just a fluke. I cannot tell which of the earlier auctions lot made this sale but Lots 1 & 2 were each just short of 20 acres – about the size of this auction. The auctioneer has recorded some of the sale prices on the poster, 12/- a frontage foot would have secured a block, that’s £30 a block. The land starts on the northern side of Whitehorse Road (Cotham Road) and extends northward to Normanby Road along the east side of Leonard Street and the western side of May Street. The whole of Terry street gets covered in the process.
