Description
The Caulfield and Elsternwick Leader reported on Friday the 9th of September 1888 that:-
“Messrs. Carney and Kelly report having held (in conjunction with
Messrs. Doherty and Turner) a successful sale of allotments in the Glen
Iris Park Estate, at prices ranging from £11 7s. 6d down to £3 17s. 6d.
per ft. Amount of sales, £20,273 16s.”
Given the number of lots, 157, the average frontage, about 50 feet and a guess at the average price, say £5, about half sold. Pretty good given the approaching end to the land boom. The development is in the area bounded by Malvern Road in the north, Albert Road in the east, Waverley Road in the south, and Darling Road in the west. Streets that cut into and through the development are Olive Street, Lucy Street (now Stonehaven Avenue), Hilda Street, Jessie Street, Gertrude (now Orville) Street and a new street Manning Road.
